Our Story

Fifty-two years on
the same corner.

One room on South Congress, one drum roaster out back, and a rule we have never broken: nobody gets rushed out of their seat.

The Retro Coffee Co. interior on South Congress Avenue
How it started

A diner counter, a used roaster, and a bad idea.

In 1974 this room was a sandwich counter with eight stools and a broken milkshake machine. The owner bought a secondhand drum roaster because the coffee he was serving embarrassed him, and because nobody told him it was a bad idea to roast in the same room you serve.

The sandwiches went. The stools stayed. So did the terrazzo floor, the burnt-orange booths, and the habit of roasting where the customers can smell it.

Fifty-two years later we are still on the same block, still roasting in the back, and still refusing to put a time limit on a table.

1974

the year the doors first opened

The long way round

Five decades, abridged

Nothing here happened quickly. That is mostly the point.

1974

The doors open

A sandwich counter with eight stools, a broken milkshake machine, and a secondhand drum roaster nobody asked for.

1989

The sandwiches go

Coffee takes over the whole menu. The roaster moves from the corner to a proper room out back.

2003

The patio happens

The lot behind the building becomes forty seats, a string of lights, and an open invitation to every dog on the block.

2018

Buying direct

We start buying straight from nine farms, and begin printing the grower on every bag we sell.

2026

Still the same corner

Same floor, same booths, same rule about nobody getting rushed. The espresso machine is on its fourth life.

Behind the counter

The ones who open up

Four people you will meet if you come in often enough. There are fourteen more who keep the place standing.

Three things we will not trade away

Beans with a name

We buy direct from nine farms and print the grower on the bag. If we cannot tell you who grew it, we do not sell it.

01

No rush, ever

Nobody clears your cup to turn the table. Stay twenty minutes or stay until the light goes orange.

02

Room for everyone

Dogs on the patio, laptops until two, a step-free door, and a shelf of books nobody keeps track of.

03

Come see it

The story reads better from a booth.

No reservations and no takeaway counter — walk in, find a seat, and stay as long as the day allows.
